Holiday Organizing Tips for you!

If you are reading this in real time, it is the final week of holiday preparations!  My brain is always thinking about the next thing and that means holiday decor removal and organization.  If getting your decorations out and up was a little (or a lot) stressful for you this year, I’d love to offer up some tips on how to make next year less stressful and more enjoyable.

But first, I just want to take a minute to say that as busy moms, the holidays can be both a mixture of enjoyment AND stress/overstimulation.  There is no shame in doing less, asking for help, or crossing items off your to-do list without even doing them.  One item I crossed off my to-do list and have no intentions of doing this year is sending holiday cards.  Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE receiving beautiful holiday cards from friends and family, and there is a large part of me that enjoys sending them as well.  However, this year, I know my limits, and I’ve decided to just nix it from my list and move on.

That leads me to the first tip: Declutter anything that you didn’t use last year, love last year, or caused stress/overstimulation for you or even certain decorations or activities.  I love to keep a list of areas in the home that we decorate and activities that we enjoyed as a family. The following year I have a written out list of what needs to be done and what activities we’d like to do again.

My second tip is to categorize your decorations by location in the house.  For example, store all of your decor for the mantle in one container, all of the decor for the kitchen in one container, all of the decor for the front door in one container, etc.  Add a label using a strip of tape and sharpie or a label using a label maker with the location to the container.

Store all bins and containers on storage racks in your storage area is the third tip.  Oftentimes our ornaments are fragile and breakable.  The last thing you want is to pull your decor out next year and find items broken.  Stacking bins on top of one another is not recommended as the weight can really cause bins to break and the contents to become damaged.  Storing the bins on racks not only prevents this but also makes it really easy to see and access what you have without having to move bins on and off of a stack.

Lastly, storage matters, and by that, yes we mean bins/containers.  HERE is a list of our favorite storage solutions for your holiday decorations.  These will keep your items in great condition to be used for many years to come.  Finding new ways to find joy, especially around the holiday season will bring new meaning to the time of year. We, as moms, have enough on our plate, let’s not let the decorating be something we dread each year! Set yourself up for success for years to come!
